NEW NOISE: Carpathian, Two Tongues, Cymbals

In its relatively short existence, Deathwish Inc. has fast become a hardcore institution, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Revelation, Dischord and other luminaries of hardcore and punk labels.

2008’s Top Music Releases – Part Five

Seattle’s These Arms Are Snakes have delivered quite a gem with LP number three – and in this case it could be said that third time is certainly the charm. The record starts off with a swift kick to the shins via “Woolen Heirs”, with see-saw riffage ala Drive Like Jehu, arching up to a quiet/loud blast to the face.

2008’s Top Music Releases – Part Four

eð suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (or With Buzzing in Our Ears We Play Endlessly) is the fifth full-length studio album by this revered Icelandic post-rock four piece, and it’s quite a departure from prior releases. And yeah, those naked people hopping the fence on the album cover is a photo by Ólafur Arnalds, the same guy who envisioned those waterfalls all around NYC this past summer. Sweet, right?

Awesome EPs of 2008

Classic beat down hardcore akin to Hatebreed, Terror, Agnostic Front, and Madball. Where so many bands fail to capture the passion and intensity of those bands, Reign Supreme do not. As their nomenclature suggests, listening to American Violence on your iPod in public may make you want to pull out a creepy crawl in the electronics section of Target (which actually sounds fun), or maybe a pizza maker while driving (which I don’t suggest).

2008’s Top Music Releases – Part Three

Swimming is the fourth LP from the gentlemen of French Kicks, and it is their best – their OK Computer; their Blonde On Blonde. A blend of melancholy pop ala Elvis Costello & The Attractions with nuances of British Invasion mod pop, this is an essential release that oozes with cool timelessness

2008’s Top 25 Music Releases – Part Two

This is a record I just can’t keep off of my iPod. I’ve rambled a bit about these guys in a prior blog and here it is again. So yeah – It’s that good. Some Kind Of Cadwallader just evokes good vibes and memories of basement shows. Sure, they sound like Cap n’ Jazz and Braid – that’s a no-brainer.

EV-What?

In 1996 General Motors debuted the first modern production electric vehicle, dubbed the EV1 -that’s “Electric Vehicle 1.” Clever, huh? But GM killed the EV1 in 2003, and now needs to be bailed out to compete with the success of other companies’ hybrids, like the Prius and other high MPG vehicles. Wait, what? They had the head start!

2008’s Top 25 Music Releases – Part One

Oh dearest Mogwai, what ever has happened to you? Usually any record of yours in a release year would be top ten fodder for sure, but not this time around. In recent years, your Slint-like loud/quiet/loud game has been pressured by sound-a-likes, like Texas rockers Explosions In The Sky and Japan’s Mono

NEW NOISE: Belle and Sebastian, Coldplay

I haven’t really listened to Belle and Sebastian since the late 90s; they got a bit overexposed and I was part of the “meh”-mumbling backlash. But I don’t discredit them at all.

Battle Of The Comebacks – Gn’R v. Metallica

A side-by-side comparison of the two biggest comeback releases in recent memory.

NEW NOISE: Jesu, The Bronx, Black Ships, Trap Them

Consisting of three full songs and two remixes, Why Are We Not Perfect sees Justin Broadrick going deeper into the darkwave/shoegaze realm he’s been invoking more with each Jesu release. The heavy guitars have slowly melted into a Cocteau Twins-like, dreamy haze. But there are still doom riffs to be found in the title track.

HEALTH, Videohippos, more – 11.7.08 – Knitting Factory

With traffic snarling our drive into the city, my girlfriend and I missed opening act, (Angel) Deradoorian of The Dirty Projectors. Milling around, I checked out the merch tables and scooped up whatever HEALTH had on vinyl due to it’s vague scarcity in the tri-state area.

NEW NOISE: A. Cadwallader, UN, Crooked Fingers & more

The band is out of Pennsylvania, though they sound like they fell out of a wormhole originating in mid-1990’s Illinois. The first thing you’ll notice is how much they sound like Cap N’ Jazz or early Joan Of Arc. Writing them off like that wouldn’t be fair though, because you can hear strains of Braid, Minus The Bear and even another Cap n’ Jazz send up, The Promise Ring.

Banksy’s The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill , NYC

On October 2nd guerrilla artist Banksy opened The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, his first official exhibition in New York City. My girlfriend and I made our way over to the Lower East Side storefront location of this installation, cameras in hand. The exhibition features chicken nuggets with legs, busily dipping themselves in sauce; a rabbit wearing a pearl necklace and filing its nails; a robot monkey wearing headphones and watching TV in a cage. There’s also the disturbing still figure of Tweety, a caged bird that has lost all of its feathers.

The Notwist, Dosh – 10.12.08 – Webster Hall, NYC

Not my favorite venue due to the sometimes-impossible sightlines coupled with NYC’s newest show going giants who nefariously appear directly in front of you. It’s always when you break your gaze away from the stage for a moment to survey the amount of people in the room or to look at the bands guitar rig. Poof, right in front of you from out of nowhere. You’re suddenly staring at shoulders of some guy talking loudly to their friends on a cell phone between pulls at their beer. Ugh.
